We're going to be honest about something: hiring a remodeling contractor can be a terrible experience. We know this because many of our customers found us after a bad experience with someone else. Here are the most common problems — and what you can do about them.
Problem #1: The Lowball Quote That Doubles
You get three quotes. One is significantly cheaper than the others. You hire that guy. Then the extras start: "We found mold behind the wall." "That electrical wasn't included." "Permits weren't in the bid." By the time you're done, the cheapest bid is the most expensive.
How to protect yourself:
Ask for a written, all-inclusive quote. If the contractor can't tell you exactly what's included, that's a red flag. Our pricing page explains what "all-inclusive" means.
Problem #2: No Communication During the Project
DFW remodeling projects often reveal surprises behind walls. The problem isn't the surprise — it's the silence. Your contractor found something, disappeared for three days, and now you have no idea what's happening or what it'll cost.
How to protect yourself:
Ask about their communication plan before you sign. How often will they update you? What happens if they find something unexpected? If they don't have an answer, expect silence when it matters.
Problem #3: Messy Job Sites
Remodeling is inherently messy. But there's a difference between "we're working" and "we left your kitchen unusable for a week and debris everywhere." A professional crew cleans up every day. An unprofessional one leaves you to deal with the mess.
Problem #4: Work That Fails Too Soon
Grout that cracks. Cabinets that sag. Tile that lifts. These aren't acts of God — they're the result of cutting corners: wrong materials, skipped substrate prep, improper installation. The cheapest bid often correlates with the most corners cut.
Problem #5: No Warranty or Accountability
When something goes wrong, some contractors disappear. Changed phone number. No response to texts. If you can't reach them when things are good, you definitely can't reach them when things go wrong.
